6 Ways to Modernize Your Church and Keep Your Congregation Engaged

If you want your church’s attendees to stay as engaged as possible during service, you’ll need to keep up with the times. Otherwise, you risk having them lose focus and fail to capture the message you’re presenting.

Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to upgrade your practices to those of the modern church. Let’s explore what you need to keep in mind.

  1. Keep Your Sermons Short

Interestingly, the attention span of the average person is now equivalent to that of a goldfish. This means that people often have trouble concentrating for long periods of time, even while in church.

In order to get more out of your sermons, it’s highly recommended that you consider shortening them. Depending on how your church practices, some sermons could last for hours.

This simply isn’t conducive to having your audience retain the most information possible. If your sermons need to be a specific length, consider breaking them up into sections. This will give people time to reflect on the topics you’d just spoken about.

It will also allow them to mentally refresh themselves.

  1. Interact With Your Audience

As you might expect, one of the best ways to keep your church engaged is to be more engaging. If there is a disconnect between your church’s staff and the audience during service, people may begin to zone out as time goes on.

More often than not, this happens unintentionally and is the byproduct of listening for a long period of time.

Instead, it’s worth considering ways in which you can interact with your audience. One of the most straightforward is to ask your audience questions during service and responding to their answers.

Larger churches typically provide audience members with a microphone so that others can hear them. This is often the method of choice regardless of church size in order to accommodate those who have difficulty speaking.

  1. Upgrade Your Praise Music

Modern times bring along modern trends, and this is especially true when it comes to music. If you want your audience to stay as engaged as possible, it’s highly worth upgrading your church’s overall sound.

Hiring a praise band that specializes in contemporary praise music is a reliable way to grab people’s attention. You can also build a stronger bond with your church’s community by having an in-house praise band that is comprised of church members.

Depending on your church’s demographic, it might be difficult to tell in advance how this transition will go. You could start off by having your new praise band play every other week.

Or, you could have them play during times other than Sunday morning, such as Wednesday nights.

You should also be sure to ask your audience for their feedback regarding this change. More likely than not, though, it will be a positive shift. You may even find it to be so popular that people request this type of music during your Sunday service.

  1. Show Appreciation for Key Members

Highlighting key members of your church community comes with a large number of benefits. Not only do you get to showcase the achievements of certain people, but you also convey to your audience that you are aware of their contributions.

This factor alone can be highly motivating for those who are looking to get involved with the church in other ways.

In practice, you would typically take a short amount of time during certain intervals to say a few words about specific members of the church. To elaborate, you might have a 10-minute segment once per week (or even once per month) to speak about those who have organized volunteer projects, made a significant donation, etc.

For those unaware, web based church management software can allow your church to streamline many day-to-day activities (such as accepting donations). So, it’s an option worth exploring while modernizing your church.

  1. Highlight Weekly Community Activities

It’s fairly easy for churchgoing to become a relatively static routine. Eventually, all of the previous weeks began to blend together if there aren’t any outstanding occurrences.

This can easily lead to your audience being less engaged than you’d like them to be.

Fortunately, you can circumvent this by highlighting weekly community activities. Each week, your church should take a moment to provide information about any fundraisers, events, or other activities that are occurring during the week.

This is true whether or not they take place on the church’s campus.

This will provide a bit more depth to each week and also encourage extra engagement from your audience. To take this a step further, you could also provide your attendees with the opportunity to organize their own community activity.

  1. Allow a Short Period for Attendees to Greet Those Around Them

There are plenty of churches out there that have little to no interruption as soon as service begins. As previously mentioned, the average person simply isn’t built this way anymore.

So, consider providing a short period for your attendees to greet those who are around them. The perfect time for this is shortly after an intro to a sermon.

This greeting period could last for 5 to 10 minutes and is a great opportunity for new members to integrate within your church’s community.

It Can Seem Complicated to Create a Modern Church

But, the above information will help you do so with as little trouble as possible. From here, you’ll be able to develop a modern church with plenty of reasons for your audience to engage, allowing them to get much more out of their attendance.
