Four Ways to Protect Yourself Online in 2024

We’re spending more and more of our time online, which means that online security is more important than ever.

From our jobs to our personal connections, just about every facet of what we do is somehow connected to the online space and the risks associated with it. Here, we’ll take a quick look at five important ways you can protect yourself, your data, and your digital identity in the modern age.

Safeguard Your Data

Now that cyber risks are more abundant than ever, protecting your data and the information shared online is essential.

First of all, protect sensitive data (like your credit card details and any important work information) with encryption software, backups, and general caution when sharing online. You should also use a software like DeleteMe to take control over what personal information is available for others online – you can remove things like your contact details, location, and even photographs. Taking control over your online presence like this as much as possible is essential.

Strengthen Your Passwords

As simple as it sounds, another crucial line of defence against unwanted access to any of your devices or data is a strong password. Make sure your password is unique and difficult to guess, even for the people you know.

Try to always use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using your name, birthday, or other obvious personal information, and opt for longer passwords over short ones. A more difficult tip to follow (but an important one) is to avoid using the same password over and over again. Instead, choose unique passwords for all of your accounts and remember them by writing them down in a notebook or using a password-storing app.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Even with a strong password, your accounts aren’t completely safe from hackers. Adding an extra layer of protection is always a good idea, and 2FA is a great method of doing so.

There are a few different types of Two-Factor Authentication. It might be a one-time password sent to your phone or email, a fingerprint or face scan, a limited code from a third-party app, or something else, depending on the platform or website you’re signing in to. Whenever you have the option, turn on 2FA to add that extra security blanket and peace of mind that your data is safe.

Watch Out for Phishing Attempts

Nobody is completely invulnerable to being swindled, no matter how clued up you think you might be! Phishing attacks and other forms of scams are a common danger online, and practising caution is important for all of us.

Any emails, messages, or websites that request your personal or financial information should be treated with a heavy dose of scepticism. Be on the lookout for email addresses that don’t align with what the company has put online, spelling errors, or even strange requests that come through messages or emails. Anything that doesn’t feel right probably isn’t and shouldn’t be trusted.
