How to Read EMF Meter: A Brief Guide

These days we have more electronics in our homes than ever. That means more electromagnetic fields (EMF) in spaces that we spend a lot of time in. Some people have concerns that EMF exposure could lead to health problems.

What does this mean for you? Do you need to worry about EMF in your home?

If you want to get a good picture of the electromagnetic activity in your home, it’s important to know how to read an EMF meter. This article will give you a better understanding of EMF meters and how to use them.

What Is an EMF Meter?

An EMF meter is a device that measures electromagnetic fields and microwave radiation in your environment. Since electronic devices are so widespread, nearly every human being is regularly exposed to electromagnetic fields.

Although the scientific community has not found evidence that EMF increases health risks, there are concerns about the increase in radiation that has come with having more electronic devices in our homes. In fact, the World Health Organization established the International EMF Project to determine the effects of electronic radiation on worldwide health.

Some people have concerns about smart meter EMF radiation. However, it is a form of non-ionizing radiation that emits very little power. Health agencies agree that there is no radiation risk from smart meters.

How to Read an EMF Meter

In order to get the most accurate results, you need to know how to use an EMF meter. Carefully read the directions included with your meter. This will tell you how the manufacturer intended you to take measurements and will give you the best results.

You’ll want to calibrate the meter before taking a reading, and then hold it at waist level when you’re taking your measurements.

The best EMF meter for you will depend on your budget and needs. A single-axis meter is cheaper, but you need to move it around to get a full reading.

On the more expensive end is a tri-axis meter. Despite the cost, this EMF meter may be better for you if you need a full field reading quickly. It does not require turning and tilting to take an accurate measurement.

Your meter will give you measurement data in different units. The electric field is measured in Volts per meter (V/m). Magnetic fields are measured in milliGauss (mG) and radiofrequency in milliWatts per square meter (mW/m²).

There is not a consensus on where an unsafe level of radiation begins. However, you’ll generally want:

  • Electric field readings below 10 V/m
  • Magnetic field readings below 1 mG
  • Radiofrequency readings below 1 mW/m²

Know About EMF in Your Home

When you know how to read an EMF meter, you can appropriately assess the electromagnetic activity in your home. Based on the data you gather, you can determine if you need to reduce the number of electronics in your home. Get an EMF meter today and ensure your home is within safe levels of activity.
