How to Read an EMF Meter
In order to get the most accurate results, you need to know how to use an EMF meter. Carefully read the directions included with your meter. This will tell you how the manufacturer intended you to take measurements and will give you the best results.
You’ll want to calibrate the meter before taking a reading, and then hold it at waist level when you’re taking your measurements.
The best EMF meter for you will depend on your budget and needs. A single-axis meter is cheaper, but you need to move it around to get a full reading.
On the more expensive end is a tri-axis meter. Despite the cost, this EMF meter may be better for you if you need a full field reading quickly. It does not require turning and tilting to take an accurate measurement.
Your meter will give you measurement data in different units. The electric field is measured in Volts per meter (V/m). Magnetic fields are measured in milliGauss (mG) and radiofrequency in milliWatts per square meter (mW/m²).
There is not a consensus on where an unsafe level of radiation begins. However, you’ll generally want:
- Electric field readings below 10 V/m
- Magnetic field readings below 1 mG
- Radiofrequency readings below 1 mW/m²
